Water Heaters FAQs
Primary Concerns: Water Heaters
I have no hot water and why won't my pilot light?
If your pilot light won't light, here are some possibilities of why:
- If there is water on the ground near your water heater, check the burner to see if there is water inside. This would indicate a crack on the inner tank and will not be able to be relite.
- There is a possibility that your water heater contains a flammable vapor sensor, which is a resettable sensor. If there are any paint cans, paint thinner or flammable vapors stored near your water heater, remove them, air out the space and then push the resettable sensor and then attempt to relight.
- There is no gas going to the water heater-possibly the gas valve has failed.
- You may have a faulty thermocouple.
- There could be damage to the flue roof cap, which can cause backdraft and will continually blow out the pilot light.
Why is there a water leak under my water heater?
- If you can follow to where the leak is coming from it may be at the top of the tank at one of your connections.
- It could be coming from your Temperature and Pressure Safety valve which is identifiable by the drip coming from the open drop tube attached to the water heater.
- Or it could be that the tank is failing and leaking from erosion at the bottom in which case you will want to shut the water supply to the heater off.

Why do I not get enough hot water, or as much as a I should?
If you are not getting enough hot water, here are some possibilities of why:
- Your tank is filling with sediment, not allowing the full amount of water in your tank to heat up. This can be true for tankless water heaters as well with scale build up. In both cases, you should flush your water heater annually for proper maintenance, best performance and longevity.
- Your water heater temperature sensor could be failing.
- If the issue is isolated to only one bathroom in a home that has multiple, it could be related to the fixture and not the water heater.
- If you are in need of service, the professionals at Rise are ready to help. Call 970-632-7473 or submit a Service Request online here: Service Request
Why does my water heater make a rumbling sound?
If your water heater is making a rumbling sound, here are some possibilities of why:
- The water heater could be too small for the demand of the home and may be depleted too quickly which causes it to heat an entire tank at a high rate of speed.
- It's possible that your water heater is condensing when it should not be and condensate is dripping down the flue and onto the burner, this will lead to an erosion of metal flue piping.
- There could be a buildup of high temperature or high pressure in the water heater.
